Microsoft introduces Windows 10 version 21H1

Microsoft introduced the next update to Windows 10, version 21H1. Find out more details about what's to come in this new update.

Based on feedback and learning over the past year of extensive remote work, learning and fun, the 21H1 version will be delivered with service technology (like the one used for the monthly update process and how the 20H2 was delivered). Windows 10, version 21H1 will have a set of features with scope to improve security, remote access and quality. The features we’re rolling out in this update focus on the core experiences customers have said they’re currently trusting. Therefore, this launch has been optimized to meet the most urgent needs of customers.

New Features

Among the features, support for new cameras for Windows Hello was added and many security-related improvements. Check out more details below:

  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating the performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.
  • Performance improvements in Windows Defender Application Guard, including optimizing times for document opening scenarios.
  • Support for multiple Windows Hello cameras to set the default as the external camera when Windows Hello external and internal cameras are present.

Those who currently use Windows 10 versions 2004 or 20H2 who choose to upgrade to the new version will have a quick installation experience because the update will be installed as a monthly update. For consumers or business users from versions prior to May 2020 (Version 2004) of Windows 10, the update process to the new version will be the same as before and will work in a similar way to the previous Windows 10 update feature, using the same tools and processes. As this version of Windows 10 is scheduled for the first half of 2021, all editions of Windows 10 of version 21H1 will receive 18 months of maintenance.

Next steps

Our multi-layered approach to developing and releasing feature updates continues and includes taking full advantage of the Windows Insider Program to gain user feedback and insights into quality data. We will start launching 21H1 builds for Windows Insiders on the Beta channel today for those Insiders who wish to join, and new features will be offered in future Windows Insider Preview builds as soon as they are ready. The wide availability of Windows 10, version 21H1 will begin at the end of the first half of this year, and we will provide more information about the release and how to get it as we approach the release of this next feature update.
