How to Set Up a Microsoft 365 Tenant: Creating Users

User Creation

In this topic we will cover the 2 ways to create users for Microsoft 365 through the Administration Panel:

  • Creation of individual users:

Open the Microsoft 365 Admin panel and click Users / Active users.

On this screen you will see the users already created in your Microsoft 365 admin panel, click on Add a user.

Fill in the required data for the creation of the user account as shown in the image below.
You can define whether an automatic password will be generated or create a personalized password, require it to be changed at first login and sent user data by email to an address of your choice and click Advance.

In the next step, you will assign product licenses to the user being created. Select the location, this field will already be filled with the default region of your tenant and select the licenses you want to apply to the new user.

In this example, I am assigning a Microsoft 365 Business Standard license, you can also define which applications related to that license you want the user to have access to and click Advance.

In the optional settings screen, you can assign roles to the user. If you are creating an account for a user who will have some administrative role in the 365 environment, you must give the appropriate permissions on this screen, always following the good practices of assigning only the necessary permission, in this case, it is a common user , then I will keep the option selected User (without access to the admin center).

At the bottom it is possible to add information in the user's profile such as Position, Department, Office, etc. These fields are optional, after completing the settings, click Next to proceed to the next screen.

Validate user information and if everything is filled in correctly, click Finish adding for the account to be created.

After finishing the creation process, you will receive a feedback informing if the creation was completed successfully or not as shown in the image below. click in Close to return to the Active Users panel.

As you can see again on the Active Users screen, the account we just created called Test 1 is already showing up with the domain tipsforinfra.com.br that we set up on last post.

  • Batch user creation:

Open the Microsoft 365 Admin panel and click Users / Active users.

On this screen you will see the users already created in your Microsoft 365 admin panel, click on Add multiple users.

On this screen you can download a CSV file containing only headers or also download with headers and example user information to assist in filling the file.

For the example, we will download the CSV with information from the sample user and open it in Excel to make it easier to fill in, it is advisable to use the function of transforming text into a column to improve the visualization of the content as shown in the image below.

After completing the completion of the CSV file, you will need to attach it on the previous screen where we downloaded the example and click Check. If all goes well, click Advance.

note: If you receive a warning that the file must be delimited with a comma, edit the CSV with Notepad and replace the ; per , that the problem will be solved.

In this screen you will define the Entry Status as Allowed or Blocked and you will also define the license that will be associated with these accounts that you are creating or you can select the option Create user without product license and click Advance.

In this last step you can download a CSV with the information of the created accounts and send it by e-mail if you think it is necessary. click in Send and close to return to the Active Users panel.

See that the 5 accounts that we created via mass import are already available in the list of Active Users, and it is only necessary to assign administration functions if necessary.
