How to Change the Time Zone of Virtual Machines in Azure

When you create a virtual machine in Azure, it is always set to the UTC timezone.

The “normal” process of changing the time zone of a Windows server does not work as expected. You can change the time zone by right clicking on the clock and selecting “Adjust date/time”. If you change the timezone here, it doesn't actually do anything (at least it didn't when I did it). It can also change for a short time and then revert to UTC.

If you use PowerShell to change the timezone, the change will remain even if the VM is deallocated and relocated.

01 – As we can see the time zone of the virtual machine is (UTC) Coordinated Universal Time.

02 – First, we need to see what are the options to change the time zone. We can see this by running the Get-TimeZone cmdlet.

Get-TimeZone -ListAvailable

03 – We can filter the list for the South America time zone with the following command.

Get-TimeZone -ListAvailable | where ({$ -like “*South America*”})

04 – We use the Set-TimeZone cmdlet to change the VM's timezone. You must put the Id of the Get-TimeZone cmdlet in the Id parameter of the Set-TimeZone cmdlet.

Set-TimeZone -Id “E. South America Standard Time”

05 – As we can see the time zone was changed to (UTC-03:00) Brasília.
